Better life

Toby was a street kid.
As far as he could remember,
his father and mother always quarrelled.
They hardly looked after him.
They often hit him.

He thought he was lost.
When he was seven, he left home.
He lived in the street
and his friends were street kids too.
The street was a better place for him
than his home with no love or warmth.

He did not go to school.
He hardly had any food.
It was a tough life with many dangers.
Many of his friends took drugs to try
and forget the harshness of their lives.
Toby could stay away from drugs though,
as something inside him told him it was wrong.

One day, he met a young lady.
She offered him to come to a care centre.
At first, he refused, but he finally went.
The centre became his new home.
He found a new world.
He found he was a kid that people
liked and wanted to help.

Toby went to school and is now
a leading figure at the care centre.
He helps street children to find a better life too.
